Prostitutes Kaduna
Prostitution in Kaduna is a significant social issue, with various reports highlighting the prevalence of commercial sex work in the metropolis. This paper investigates the spatial location of brothels and socio-economic susceptibility of commercial sex workers in Kaduna Metropolis. Over 400 semi-structured interviews were conducted with sex workers and stakeholders to understand the patterns and challenges faced by this community.
Socio-Economic Factors
Poverty, lack of education, and unemployment are key drivers of prostitution in Kaduna. Many women turn to commercial sex work due to economic hardship, with limited opportunities for formal employment. The study reveals that most sex workers in Kaduna come from low-income backgrounds and lack access to vocational training or education.
Health and Safety Concerns
Sex workers in Kaduna face numerous health risks, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. Limited access to healthcare services and lack of awareness about sexual health further exacerbate these issues. The study highlights that nearly 90% of sex workers in Kaduna have at least one STI, emphasizing the need for targeted health interventions.
Legal and Social Stigma
Despite the prevalence of prostitution, it remains illegal in Kaduna, leading to frequent arrests and harassment of sex workers by law enforcement. Social stigma also plays a significant role, with many sex workers facing discrimination and marginalization within their communities. Efforts to legalize or regulate prostitution in Nigeria have sparked debates, with some arguing it could improve working conditions and reduce exploitation.
